🌟MRI in Breast Cancer Diagnosis
Current News from the World of Mammology
Dear friends, I would like to share an important discovery from the world of mammology with you.
In the "Radiology" journal of 2022, a study was published that demonstrates the significance of MRI screening of the opposite breast in patients with newly diagnosed breast cancer. 💡
The study by Freitas V. and colleagues, published in the "Radiology" journal in 2022, showed the benefit of contrast-enhanced preoperative MRI of the opposite breast in patients with newly diagnosed breast cancer. The study is retrospective and pertains to common cases of contralateral breast carcinomas associated with an increased risk of distant metastases and worse prognosis.
The study analyzed data from 1199 women diagnosed with breast cancer from January 2008 to December 2010. Of these, 842 underwent MRI of the opposite breast, while 357 did not. The study monitored the occurrence of synchronous (within 3 months of diagnosis) and metachronous (after more than 3 months) metastases, as well as the stage and frequency of non-invasive carcinomas in the opposite breast.
The results showed that patients who underwent MRI of the opposite breast had a longer cancer-specific survival (CSS) and overall survival (OS), although statistical significance for CSS was not achieved. Women with primary tumors larger than 2 cm and poorly differentiated carcinomas benefited the most. The sensitivity and specificity of MRI for contralateral breast cancer were 80% and 98%, respectively.
The study concludes that preoperative MRI of the opposite breast increases the detection rate of synchronous carcinomas and improves prognosis.
Independent risk factors for an unfavorable course included the absence of MRI of the opposite breast, older age, larger tumors, stage III carcinomas, and metastases in the axillary lymph nodes.
👩⚕️ It's incredible how progress in medicine opens up new avenues for understanding and treating breast cancer. Remember: every case is individual, and it is crucial to thoroughly discuss all treatment options and risks with your doctor.
